HVAC 2 Position Service Valve: Front Seat & Fully Open Positions

In the HVAC industry, service valves play a crucial role in controlling the flow of refrigerant within a system. One type of service valve commonly used is the 2 position service valve, which has two main positions: the front seat position and the fully open position. Front Seat Position

The front seat position of a 2 position service valve is when the valve is turned clockwise all the way down, sealing off the lower tube from the other two tubes. This position is used to trap all the refrigerant in the outdoor unit, especially during the installation of a new system. When the outdoor unit already contains refrigerant, the service valves will be in the front seat position to hold the refrigerant in the unit.

It is important to note that the front seat position should only be opened after the copper tubing, also known as a line set, is fully connected, brazed, pressure tested, and vacuumed down below 500 microns. This ensures that the system is properly prepared before allowing refrigerant to enter.

To prevent any damage to the system, it is recommended to torque the valve downwards all the way and use an adjustable wrench on the service staff to avoid putting pressure on the braze joints on the line set.

Fully Open Position

The fully open position of a 2 position service valve is when the valve connects the two tubes in the port, allowing the refrigerant to flow freely within the system. This position is typically used when the system is running and there is no need to restrict the flow of refrigerant.

When the service valves are in the fully open position, they should be left as is while the system operates. If there is a need to access the system’s refrigerant charge, a service hose attached to manifold gauges can be connected to the port of the fully open valve. By depressing the schrader valve on the service hose, the refrigerant can be measured or adjusted as necessary.

Importance of Proper Valve Positioning

Understanding and correctly positioning the 2 position service valves is crucial for the safe and efficient operation of HVAC systems. Improper valve positioning can lead to various issues, such as compressor burnout or refrigerant leaks.

New technicians should be cautious when working with these valves, as mistakes can easily occur. For example, closing the valve entirely without opening it back up can result in liquid refrigerant shooting out when the gauges are removed. This can be dangerous and cause severe frostbite or other injuries.

It is also important to note that different HVAC systems may have variations in valve design and operation. Some valves may have additional features, such as a packing nut for adjustment, while others may require specific tools for valve core removal.
